Vat Phou

Vat Phou (Vat meaning Temple and Phou meaning Mountain) is an ancient ruin in Khmer Hindu sanctuary complex in Southern Laos. It is situated at the base of Phu Kao, nearly 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) from the Mekong in Champasak region. There used to be a sanctuary on the site in the early fifth century, yet the surviving structures date from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries.

The sanctuary has an exceptional structure, in which the components prompt a holy place where a lingamdevoted to Lord Shiva was washed in water from a mountain spring. The site later turned into a focal point of Theravada Buddhist worship, which it remains today.  Vat Phou Champasak is older than the world renowned Angkor Wat structures in neighboring Cambodia
